SoggeWeb is a personal project begun by Glenn and Tammy Sogge of Elgin, Illinois. We hope that we can provide information to other Sogges in the world that may help in tracing family trees. We see this as an ongoing work in progress to which you can contribute.
According to Don Sogge's genealogy page:In Norway the name is pronounced Sajjin, dative Sagga, genitive Sagg. In Aslak Bolt’s book it is written Sogdom. In Norwegian Accountings and Land Books 1514-1521 Sodeighe. In Olav Engelbrektson’s Land Book 1530 Sugge, 1590 Sogge, 1643 Souge, 1661 and 1723 Sogge. The name stems from the Old Norse Sodgar, from the verb sjoda, boil, probably in connection with the river current. (Farm and Family History for Surnadal, Norway)Don is my cousin's father-in-law; Jarl Sogge (Glenn's cousin) and Wendy Sogge (Don's daughter) are apparently the second Sogge-Sogge marriage that is known. According to Don, the two Sogge families lived on farms on opposite sides of the Lutheran church back in Norway. No one knows exactly what the name Sogge means. It has been said that it has something to do with the sound from the river, though it is only during special weather that the sound can be heard. It is the sound that water makes when it is swirling, such as in a whirlpool.
We have also heard (fall, 1999) from Kristoffer Sogge in Norway who also sent a picture of Sivert Sogge (Picture in the Historical Gallery section). He wrote,Dear Sogge familyI have with the greatest interest studying the Sogge Web and the Sogge trees at Internet.
I am myself a product of a Sogge-Sogge marriage.
My mother was born Ingeborg Sogge and from the family of Sivert Sogge born 1810. Sivert was the grandfather of Knute Sogge, in the family of Glenn and Jarl.
My father was born Arne Sogge and from the family of Raag (Rolv) Sogge, the grandfather of Nils Sogge born 1838. Nils was the grandfather of Donald Sogge.
My name is Kristoffer Sogge, 62 years and born in Surnadal, Norway. I am a retired major from the Royal Norwegian Air Force and living near Kristiansand in the south part of Norway. I have met Donald Sogge and his family, Wendy and Jarl in Surnadal.
If I can be any help with tracing the family trees, please drop a note to my internet address: krisogge@online.no
I have a lot of books about the family Sogge and some good addresses for searching on the net for emigrants from Norway and family in Norway. I have also local contacts in Norway. I am very interested in genealogical stuff myself.
Best wishes and congratulations with the project
We heard again from Kristoffer in March, 2000:Some informations about Sogge in Norway:In Norway you will find the name Sogge only two places on the map:
- Sogge in Surnadal, a valley not far from Trondheim and
- Sogge in Rauma, Andalsnes, near the city of Molde. This two Sogges are not related. In 1860 three brothers from Sogge in Rauma moved to Harstad in the north of Norway. They got married and today there are a lot of Sogge in that region too. The speed skater Svein Erik Sogge from the 60's belong to them.
Today you find in the complete Telephone book of Norway only 60-70 persons with the name Sogge, I guess there are more in US.
