Program Notes From A Performance of "Inner Truth/Limitations"

The following is from the program notes written by composer and director Robert Moran for a concert by the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble on February 28, 1978. Other composers featured on the program included Peter Gena, Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, Zygmunt Krauze, Philip Glass, Anestis Logothetis, Yoko Ono and Nam June Paik.

Inner Truth/Limitations was performed by a large ensemble that was dispersed around the concert hall and balconies.

Glenn R. Sogge has offered the following information:

G____ R. S____ was born in E_____, O_____ in 19__. He studied at N___________ U_________ and the S_____ of the A__ I________ from where he received a B_______ of F___ A___ degree. His teachers have included T_____ C. W_____ and F_______ R______ in music and J___ B______ in art. He has been occasionaly active in the fields of C_________ A__, E_______ M____, A__ and T_________ and P__________ A__ as visiting artist, performer, and/or lecturer. These and other habits are supported by his job as assistant manager in a retail store and/or occasional day labor.

____________, written in 19__, is one of a group of pieces resulting from speculations concerning the aesthetics and implementations of various conceptual and philosophical problems of notation and performance and their interaction(s). In general, the results are of the "open score" persuasion with tendencies towards hermeticism and esotericism that verge on the ineffable. (Once in a while, they slip and verge instead on the incomprehensible and pretentious.) In any case, notes are notes.

The score of "Inner Truth/Limitations" was realized for this evening's ensemble and this specific environment, by NU's Composition Class. Each member of the class took one measure (4 chords), orchestrated each allowing the ancient oracle book, the I-Ching, to determine the texture and dynamic levels throughout.
