A note about aesthetics and philosophy:
Many of the works from earlier lifetimes are very "open score" in style -- they are notations (including words, images, symbols) that are meant to suggest to performers (i.e., the interpreters) ways in which they can collaborate with the composer to create a musical experience for the listeners (which may be only themselves). All music is interpreted in some way -- you hope to find good interpreters rather than good rule followers.
As the minimal instructions to The World Opens Up In Many Ways says these notations are meant to suggest possible ways of interpretation but not necessarily to eliminate ways of interpretation Mar 27 1997 |
